Comment on "Dynamics of the interactions of rotons with quantized vortices in helium II"

چکیده
Samuels and Donnelly, [1] in a recent Letter, have successfully applied the unusual kinematics of rotons to an analysis of roton-vortex scattering and mutual friction in He II. We applaud this success, which uses an approach we have advocated in an earlier publication. [2] Our purpose, in the present note, is to point out that the authors have made an unnecessary approximation in analyzing roton trajectories near vortex lines. Application of the conservation of angular momentum yields an exact result, which differs somewhat from theirs. If one uses the conservation laws, the calculation of orbits is reduced to a quadrature, as in the familiar classical mechanics problem of motion in a central force field. [3] The excess energy of an elementary excitation in a superfluid velocity field, given by δε(p) = p · vs(r), takes the form

Visualization of quantized vortex dynamics
We discuss an experimental technique developed to visualize quantized vortices in helium II. We illuminate micron-sized solid particles of hydrogen suspended in the fluid, and mark quantized vortex cores within the volume observed by a camera. While, under some circumstances, the particles modify vortex dynamics by the action of viscous drag and by pinning vortex intersections, we do capture ba...

Helium-II at (finite) temperature below the transition T ≈ 2.17 K can be described as the superposition of two interacting fluids. A normal fluid which has non-zero viscosity and an inviscid superfluid, in which vorticity is confined to quantized vortices [1]. The large-scale dynamics of these two copenetrating fluids obey respectively the Navier-Stokes and Euler equations (at low Mach number) ...
متن کاملTorsion and Quantized Vortices
A propagation torsion model for quantized vortices is proposed. The model is applied to superfluids and liquid Helium II. ce2cm In a recent paper[1] it was shown following earlier works[2, 3] that the magnetic field associated with the torsion induced defects in spacetime with intrinsic spin density source could lead to line defects carrying a quantized flux with a relation satisfying
متن کاملVortices in Bose-Einstein Condensates: Theory
Vortices are pervasive in nature, representing the breakdown of laminar fluid flow and hence playing a key role in turbulence. The fluid rotation associated with a vortex can be parameterized by the circulation Γ = ∮ dr · v(r) about the vortex, where v(r) is the fluid velocity field. While classical vortices can take any value of circulation, superfluids are irrotational, and any rotation or an...
متن کاملQuantized vortices in BEC and superconductors
Quantized vortices is a well-know signature of superfluidity. They have been studied extensively in superfluid Helium, type-II superconductors, Bose Einstein condensates and more recently in Fermi gas. We will discuss some mathematical analysis and numerical simulations of the quantized vortex nucleations in superconductors and Bose-Einstein condensates and discuss their connections and similar...
